Position Description
The U.S. Border Patrol, a component of CBP, is specifically responsible for patrolling 6,000 miles of international land borders and 2,000 miles of coastal waters. Border Patrol Agents work around the clock on missions, in all types of terrain and weather conditions. One of your most important activities as a Border Patrol Agent is performing line watch duties. This involves the detection, prevention and apprehension of terrorists, undocumented aliens, and human smugglers.

Border Patrol Agents accomplish this by:

• Performing traffic checkpoint operations, city patrols, transportation checks and other law enforcement duties, as assigned
• Maintaining surveillance from a covert position
• Using cutting edge technology, such as infrared scopes during night-time operations
• Interpreting and following tracks, marks and other physical evidence of illegal aliens and smugglers

All newly hired Border Patrol Agent trainees complete a basic training program at the Border Patrol Academy, and receive full pay and benefits while in training.

Basic Requirements
To be eligible for employment with CBP, applicants must:

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Be referred for selection prior to your 40th birthday (waiver for Veterans’ preference eligible)
• Reside in the U.S. for 3 of the last 5 years (military exception)
• Be eligible to carry a firearm
• Pass the application process which includes a job-related medical, fitness and drug test, a background investigation and polygraph examination
• Be willing to travel; frequent travel is required both domestic and foreign Temporary Duty (TDY) assignments
